Students gather around in Robotics Club as they put together a new robot.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are all on full display here at Shughart Middle School with the implementation of our Robotics Club. The club is in its third year and has been growing in student participation. Led by Nurse Evans, students get the opportunity to show off their crafty, technical skills as well as learn how to build robots by following instructions. Students can create their robots from scratch by designing it first, then applying it through the use of Legos. It is more than just playing with Lego blocks. Robotics Club also teaches students how to program their robots to perform simple and complex tasks, by using block coding. Pretty cool, huh?

There are other skills that students learn in Robotics Club. It teaches them teamwork, as they work together with one another to create their own masterpieces. This year was the first year that Shughart was able to compete against other middle schools. The students were able to display their robots and had them to complete simple tasks in a robot arena course. This year the Robotic Club went on a field trip to the Airborne Innovation Lab (AIL) where the students were able to view a demonstration of robot dogs and operate one of the drones. They also participated in a wiring and circuitry build led by AIL soldiers.

Robotics Club is always open for new members who excel in applied science, mathematics, technology, and art. For any student who loves to build and/or take apart things. For any student who is creative and loves to let their imagination roam free. For any students who love to draw, plan, and follow steps. For any students into coding and programming. Or for any students who are just curious, Robotics Club is the right place for you.
